Spain is the European country that consumes the most legumes, but domestic production barely covers internal demand. Market supply is complemented by a high volume of imported chickpeas and other legumes for human consumption, including lentils and beans.Recent statistics highlight that Spain imports 80% of the legumes it consumes. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPAMA), chickpea imports in 2015 exceeded 51,000 tons, a figure expected to increase due to rising demand for legumes and the reduction of cultivated land in our country.Spain imports 75% of the chickpeas consumed domestically since internal demand far exceeds national production. A significant portion of legumes comes from India, the main global supplier of legumes.
Growing Interest in Legumes
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the average worldwide consumption of legumes is 7 kilograms per person per year. Forecasts suggest that consumption will remain stable in the medium to long term due to population growth. In Spain, legume consumption is among the highest in the world. The most cultivated and consumed legumes worldwide are lentils, chickpeas, and beans. China and India are the main producers of legumes. Specifically, India is the primary supplier of legumes, with a production of 18.4 million tons in 2014 compared to a global production of 72.2 million tons the same year, representing a significant percentage.Meanwhile, Spain imports 75% of the chickpeas consumed domestically from other countries, hence the clear increase in chickpea imports from India. In general, international trade in legumes has experienced a 5.5% increase in recent decades, especially since 1980. High global demand amounted to 12.5 million tons in 2014. Chickpea production alone reached 45,400 tons the same year. Although Spain ranks first in the European Union, our production is not sufficient to meet domestic demand.
